THE PUB PORTRAIT PROJECT: CAPTURING THE LOCALS IN MY LOCAL
AS FEATURED IN AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER MAGAZINE’
An excerpt from THE BOOK:
“Portraits aren’t easy - and that’s why I love them. Gaining the trust of a stranger and building a rapport that will lead to an interesting portrait is a process that is filled with new challenges every time you do it.
Each new subject has a set idea of which is their “best side” and a lifelong fear of the camera that can usually be traced back to the embarrassing school photo - which makes posing for a portrait a daunting affair.
My approach to portraiture is to work without a set idea of what I’m going to do. I like to explore the subject, trying different angles and expressions with the aim of capturing fleeting moments that feel natural and representative of the individual I am facing. The ultimate aim is to create a moment of relaxed collaboration between subject and photographer from which an aspect of their personality can be captured for posterity.
Working in a busy, noisy pub instead of an intimate studio certainly made the process extra challenging, but many brave subjects stepped forward to sit on a little stool on the stage in The Duke of Wellington and face me and my cameras, for which I am eternally grateful.
I hope you enjoy looking at these portraits as much as I did making them.
Anil Mistry”
